DARPA has announced its Ground Truth program, an effort to gain better fundamental understanding of the strength and limitations of quantitative and qualitative methods commonly used in the social sciences.

At present, the quest to infer causes of social phenomena based on real-world observations is plagued by the seemingly insurmountable hurdle of validation.  The upcoming program aims to use artificial, yet plausible, computer-based social-system simulations with built-in “ground truth” causal rules as testbeds to validate the accuracy of various social science modeling methods.

A Proposers Day is schedule for April 20, 2017.
