Sounds like science fiction, but indeed a new world record for quantum teleportation has been set, bringing quantum communication networks that can stretch between cities a step closer.

Two DARPA-funded teams have performed quantum teleportation over several kilometers of metropolitan fiber networks, paving the way for future quantum technologies on the city scale. The research was published Sept. 19 on the website of the journal Nature Photonics, along with an accompanying article. The research was funded in part by DARPA’s Quiness and Information in a Photon programs.
