Most Americans might not realize that our modern electrical grid includes much more than power plants, transformers, and wires. Today, our electrical grid includes wind and solar power sources, battery storage, and other energy resources. This creates challenges for the reliable delivery of electricity to homes and businesses. The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) has created the “GO Competition” to address these challenges. The goal is to create new software management solutions for a more reliable and secure grid. Starting in November 2018, the first component—GO Challenge 1—offers up to $4 million in prizes for researchers and entrepreneurs to develop new software tools that enable faster and more efficient power routing across the grid. So, the next time you see a wind farm or solar panels, remember all the work being done to integrate those renewable energy sources into America’s electric grid: it will allow us to keep the lights on for generations to come.
