A group of Dutch scientists are digging deeper into the potential of thorium molten salt reactors (TMSRs) for the first time in over four decades. They are starting with a series of concept experiments including testing a lithium fluoride/thorium mixture to test collection of metal by-products during a fission cycle followed by a test utilizing a mixture of¬†beryllium to test corrosion of the containment materials which would be used with a TMSR. While early steps, these scientists are looking to build upon the research completed at ORNL in the 60s and 70s using modern and readily available materials to determine if a TMSR would be effective and safe. Sadly, we aren’t quite ready to tell Quaid to turn on the reactor but this is a good first step into a potentially safer type of energy producing nuclear reactor.
