A team of researchers out of MIT published on the “Fabrication of fillable microparticles and other complex 3D microstructures” which propose a novel mechanism for vaccination. Many vaccines require boosters to ensure strong immunological response. This can be a big hurdle for reaching individuals due to time commitment to return or logistically to ensure delivery and storage. The researchers have described using microparticles filled with the immunogen which are released at specific periods post injection – potentially eliminating the need for follow-up and multiple shots. Pretty cool technology which could be of great public health benefit in both the US and around the world.
