The time is coming when it wont just be our phones which are ‘smart’ but also our clothes, tattoos, even our bodies. A recent comment article on Nature focuses on the idea of the BodyNET, a system of interconnected smart devices which can be worn, implanted, or simply printed for attachment onto people (or animals I would assume). Many science fiction stories have built on this idea and as our electronics and batteries get smaller, safer, more cost effective, and more flexible it appears we are closer than ever to making this happen. This article does touch on not just the creation of these devices but security, policy, quality, and overall interface with society. How do you see this technology developing? Where are gaps we should start looking at now to ensure smooth and effective transition into society?
